Though it's huge, though it's hefty, though it's austere - the Claret Prestige is the closest to drinkable of these Renaissance '99's. The bouquet is ripe, mellow and spicy and features macerated and roasted black currant and black cherry fruit with classic touches of cedar, tobacco, coffee and lead pencil, 'classic', that is, in the style of the red wines of Bordeaux.
This wine is a blend of 29% Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon 28%, Merlot 27%, Syrah 11%, Petit Verdot 5%. 1999 was a forest fire year and gave us outstanding Clarets and Cabernets in all categories: Premier Cuvee; Vin de Terroir; Estate.

?Though it's huge, though it's hefty, though it's austere - the Claret Prestige is the closest to drinkable of these Renaissance '99's. The bouquet is ripe, mellow and spicy and features macerated and roasted black currant and black cherry fruit with classic touches of cedar, tobacco, coffee and lead pencil, 'classic', that is, in the style of the red wines of Bordeaux.
In the mouth, the wine is very dry, spicy and tannic, borne on tides of briers, brambles and underbrush. Like its cousins reviewed here, the Claret Prestige, 1999 is given no new oak but ages for 18 months in large, neutral barrels of French and American oak.
Alder Yarrow - July - 2014
Medium to dark ruby in the glass, this wine smells of espresso and cedar with a hint of forest floor. In the mouth, aromatically sweet flavors of cedar, cherry, tobacco and forest floor have a nice dried herb note in the finish. Excellent acidity keeps the wine bright and juicy for its length. The delicious blend is not disclosed on the label.
Score: Between 9 and 9.5
