Our first release was in 1982 under the da Vinci Label. This, the Founder's Reserve, came one year later and is now 42 years old.
When Karl Werner came to us as a consultant, he first tasted the soil. He was satisfied and said we could grow excellent cabernet grapes. The he set himself to provide wines that would last for decades. This wine is the realization of that aim.
Fredric Koeppel - July, 2014
Coming around now; still very dry, dense, tannic and austere but with flavors of stewed fruit compote, notes of resin and almond skin, briers and leather, allspice and dried rosemary. Now through 2023.
Alder Yarrow - July, 2015
Dark ruby in the glass, with a hint of orange at the rim, this wine smells of sweet cedar, cherry, and leather. In the mouth, prodigious tannins wrap t Ideally maheir thick, peanut-buttery hands around a core of pine duff, dried cherries, leather, and forest floor. Good acidity and length, but the tannins are very overpowering. Still, there's something quite charming about the sweetness of the nose and the savory notes that linger in the finish of the wine along with the crushed stone minerality.
Score: 'Around' 8.5
From The Winemaker
The nose is a powerful boquet of great complexity and depth (berries, musk, tar, earth, spices, tobacco). On the palate it is lean, compact, tight and austere....with high acid, red-berry fruit and powerful dry tannins.
Ideally matches to roasted meats with powerful sauces, mature cheeses or any fine steak.
